I've been given the go-ahead to repair a phonograph, so I see soldering in my future. Once that happens, then I can start listening to my inherited collection to see what's worth keeping.
A Teaser of a Teaser
Impromptu visit this weekend to a close friend that I haven't seen since university, made convenient by the de facto holiday!
But when I get back, I've got a couple side projects I want to dive into.
I bought that kayak, more on that later (I plan on going into detail to explain my process in case I choose to go through it again or to help others out).
I aim to do some research about kayaking tips, but mainly safety measures and the intention on my first outing is to practice self rescue so that I'll be familiar and confident with the procedure should any unfortunate incident occur. Luckily I have a wetsuit, so I can preserve some of my heat in our cold water for a good number of attempts (I would assume).

A soldering iron station, solder wire, multimeter, capacitors, and the instruction manual for “HT-550 Direct Drive Turntable”. The phonograph itself is upside down holding all of the items above.
Next, as you'll see in the picture over there, I've been given the go-ahead to use my discretion in making repairs to my parent's old HT-550 phonograph AKA turntable.
Based on the issues that have been reported to me and from my research and the age of the table, I determined that the best course of action would be to replace all of the electrolytic capacitors on the board. This should hopefully resolve the issues and get it back into full working condition.
What's spurred that side project on is another side project. My parents got a bunch of vinyls from my dad's mom and they don't intend to keep many of them, so I've laid claim to as many as I could. But a lot of these albums I'm not familiar with. Some don't exist elsewhere (live performances or elsewise), and some the quality may be too patchy to enjoy. Once the phonograph is back into working order (or once I buy my own if this one can't be fixed), I intend to listen through as may of them as I can while I'm working since I'm just kinda stuck in one place for 8 hours a day anyway.
Of course not if it distracts from work - just enough to determine like/don't like Keep/don't Keep, then I can assess more closely later on.
Enough for now. Watching Critical Role Campaign 2, Episode 140, and it is ROUGH.
Ta!
